The New York Yankees aren’t the only ones who’ll be writing an extra check to Major League Baseball this year.
According to The Associated Press, the Red Sox will join the Yankees as the only two clubs in baseball to pay the luxury tax for the 2010 season. Boston reportedly will pay $1.5 million for going over the 2010 tax threshold of $170 million. It’s their first time having to pay the tax since 2007.
The Yankees, on the other hand, are going the opposite way. While the Bombers will pay out $18 million, it’s a relatively sharp drop from their 2009 payment. The World Series champions paid $26 million last season. In fact, the $18 million payment is New York’s lowest since 2003.
