Despite being 16-9, the Orlando Magic are attempting to pull off a roster overhaul of epic proportions — putting together two separate mega-deals at once.
The Magic and Suns have agreed in principal to swap Vince Carter, Michael Pietrus, Marcin Gortat, a 2011 first-round pick and $3 million for Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson, according to ESPN.
The Magic also acquired guard Gilbert Arenas from the Wizards in exchange for Rashard Lewis.
The move signals the initial moments of a rebuilding process in Phoenix that began when Amare Stoudemire left for New York City this past summer. The Suns are 12-13 this season after having made it to the Western Conference Finals in 2010.
The moves will see the Magic move four significant contributors and two starters, despite already being considered among the NBA's elite. Still, the starting five had never entirely worked chemistry-wise, and the Magic perhaps peaked as a team with Turkoglu's presence in the 2009 playoffs.
Both Lewis and Arenas have among the most "untradeable" contracts in the NBA, and while they have yet to come to pass officially, it is only fitting that one would be moved for another. Each has over $60 million remaining on their contracts, despite little production the past few years. That deal would reportedly not include any other money or draft picks.
