It’s not quite Mark Teixeira money, but Adrian Gonzalez‘ new extension with the Red Sox will reportedly be very, very close to that, at least in terms of yearly salary.
WEEI’s Rob Bradford is reporting that a source has confirmed that the Red Sox and their new All-Star first baseman have agreed to terms on a seven-year, $154 million contract extension. The deal was initially reported by Fox’s Ken Rosenthal.
That deal, of course, would start prior to the 2012 season as Gonzalez is under contract for the 2011 season and is set to make just over $6 million. The extension would be an average of $22 million annually.
The two sides were reportedly hung up over a contract extension over the weekend as it was reported that Gonzalez was seeking an extension rivaling that of Teixeira, who signed an eight-year, $180 million pact with the Yankees prior to the 2009 season.
