Report: Red Sox Offered Mariano Rivera Three-Year Contract

With all this “Red Sox should sign Jetah!” talk that’s filled Boston over the past few weeks, there’s been another Yankee legend dangling in free agency who went largely unnoticed.

That player, Mariano Rivera, aka the greatest closer of all time, is no longer a free agent, as he was finally given the two-year deal from the Yankees that he wanted.

But, while the Yankees initially only wanted to offer Rivera a one-year deal, they may have been forced to double up because of an offer from — of all teams — the Boston Red Sox.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman, the Red Sox “tried to steal” Rivera with a three-year offer.

While the chances of Rivera leaving New York for Boston might have been lower than those of Jeter, it’s certainly an interesting wrinkle to the offseason and adds another footnote to the best rivalry in baseball.
