Stanford Women's Basketball Celebrate in National Championship Style, Hand Geno Auriemma New Year's Eve Headache It’s going to be an awkward New Year’s Eve for those partying with Geno Aureimma in Storrs, Conn., on Friday night.

On Thursday, the Stanford women’s basketball team issued the UConn women’s hoops team its first loss since the 2008 NCAA semifinals — a span of 90 straight contests. Ironically, it was Stanford that topped UConn in that March Madness contest.

Stanford celebrated in style as the players danced around like they just won the national championship, while Auriemma and the Huskies were left scratching their heads. I believe I speak for everyone in New England, women’s college hoops fans or not, when I say: It’s not even January, ladies. Save the dancing for March Madness.

Was this win good for women’s college basketball? Without the Huskies’ winning streak, the sport has now lost interest from the average sports fan, which may send it back into obscurity as it battles NFL playoffs, NBA and NHL for national attention.

Quote of the day

“I’m here to play football. That’s what I get paid to do, and I love playing it. No matter what is at stake or what the deal is, I want to play. I know people are probably thinking different about that, but I don’t worry about other stuff. Whatever coach [Bill] Belichick decides for me, that’s what I’m going to do. I’m always ready to play.”
Wes Welker, when asked whether he plans on playing on Sunday against the Dolphins

Comment of the day

Some people like offbeat marketing ploys, such as this one held Thursday night in Atlanta during the Bruins-Thrashers game on NESN. This reader, however, is not one of those people.

Marriage is supposed to be a solemn ceremony between a man and a woman who are deeply in love, making a lifetime committment before God, not a freaking side show. No wonder so many end in a divorce in two years or less. This makes me siclk.”
