On Thursday, the Stanford women’s basketball team issued the UConn women’s hoops team its first loss since the 2008 NCAA semifinals — a span of 90 straight contests. Ironically, it was Stanford that topped UConn in that March Madness contest.
Stanford celebrated in style as the players danced around like they just won the national championship, while Auriemma and the Huskies were left scratching their heads. I believe I speak for everyone in New England, women’s college hoops fans or not, when I say: It’s not even January, ladies. Save the dancing for March Madness.
Was this win good for women’s college basketball? Without the Huskies’ winning streak, the sport has now lost interest from the average sports fan, which may send it back into obscurity as it battles NFL playoffs, NBA and NHL for national attention.
