As the bitterness surrounding Steven Gerrard's hamstring injury subsides, Liverpool fans can take solace in the fact their captain could be returning as soon as next week for the Reds' upcoming match against Newcastle United.

Gerrard suffered the grade-two injury playing for England during an international match against France on Nov. 17. The injury sparked a flurry of angry tweets from the medical staff at Anfield because Gerrard played longer than England had promised to Liverpool, and incurred the injury during the extra time.

However, the captain's recovery process is moving along well, LFC.tv reports, and the medical team is hoping he will return to full training next week.

"Steven's going well. He's back running, though not back in training," Dr. Peter Brukner told the team's website. "He's certainly looking good to play the Newcastle game, which has been our target all along."

Gerrard will need to get a solid week of training in before the match, however, another target that looks to be on point for the Reds.

"We're hoping he'll be back in training at the start of next week," Dr. Brukner added. "Everything's gone to plan."
