The Reading Royals, an ECHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins, were involved in a bench-clearing brawl over the weekend with the Florida Everblades that was vaguely reminiscent of the big, bad Bruins' bench-clearing slugfests of the 1970s.
Leading the way for the Royals was Bruins prospect, Ryan Donald, whose name may sound familiar as the Yale alum participated in Boston’s development and training camps last summer.
Donald got tempers flaring when he took on Florida's Mike Egener just 1:50 into the contest, according to Naples News. During a five-on-five royal rumble later that frame, Donald hopped the boards and came to teammate Rob Kwiet's aid when Egener sucker punched him as he made his way to the bench.
As seen in the video below, Donald (No. 2) drops the mitts on the bench and hops the boards to take on Egener in a rematch.
Donald received two five-minute fighting majors and a 10-minute game misconduct for leaving the bench. Teammate Brett Gallant (the Royals' ''resident idiot who started the whole thing,'' according to Everblades head coach Greg Poss) received a five-minute fighting major and 15 minutes (a five-minute major and a 10-minute game misconduct) for spearing. Egener led all with two five-minute fighting majors, a five-minute attempt/deliberate injury and a 10-minute third-man in misconduct.
