At this point, however, the Cavs’ 17-game losing streak is more than just “karma,” as James would tweet. It is a miserable stretch of unfortunate injuries and embarrassing losses, and from the looks of it, it’s not getting any better for the Cleveland crew.
Cleveland came close on Monday night, almost registering its first win since Dec. 18, against the Eastern Conference’s second-worst team, the New Jersey Nets. The Nets pulled away with a close 103-101 victory, however, leaving Cleveland with its 17th straight loss heading down a stretch of tough matchups — including a rematch with LeBron.
The Cavs are just seven games away from matching the league record for consecutive losses, which was, ironically, set by the 1982 Cavaliers. The upcoming seven-game stretch for the Cavs is not easy, either, as they face off against Boston, Orlando and Miami within the next seven days.
Early February matchups against the Pacers and the Grizzlies are the Cavs’ best chances at breaking their winless spell, but with key players such as Anderson Varejao and Mo Williams out with injuries, the outlook is bleak for the Cavs to snap out of this one.
A win over the Celtics — or even better, against the Heat — could possibly give Cleveland the confidence booster it needs to rise above the losing funk … but don’t count on it.
