Fan Forum: Michael Jordan, Bobcats Owner, Will Have to Adjust to Life Without Championships As a player, Michael Jordan collected so many championship rings that he can’t fit them on one hand. As an owner? Those four fingers might remain bare forever.

The Bobcats owner is perhaps the most competitive person to ever walk the planet, a trait that drove him to being the best basketball player of all time and a six-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls. Jordan endured some hardships in his early days, only to flourish in the ’90s. His beginnings in Charlotte are similarly discouraging, but there’s enough reason to believe his Bobcats may never climb out of their rut.

The Bobcats are 15-21, and that’s despite a four-game winning streak and a stretch that’s seen them win six of eight. In their six full seasons as an NBA franchise, they’ve finished with a record above .500 just once. That was last year, and instead of building on that success, the team let Raymond Felton walk away to join the Knicks and now looks destined for another sub-.500 year.

What Jordan wants to do is win championships. He’s trying to impose that will on his players, and if it means he has to show the door to a legendary basketball coach, then so be it. The Bobcats are a mediocre franchise at best, and that’s something that MJ can’t stomach.

But wanting and getting are two very different things, and the Bobcats are going to have trouble getting to where Jordan wants them to be. To say the very least, it’s an uphill journey — one that even Jordan might find impossible to climb. Remember, this is the same region that couldn’t support the Hornets back in the early part of the decade, ultimately leading the team to move to New Orleans.

Can Jordan build a championship contender in Charlotte? Based on the way the NBA works, where really only three or four teams from each conference have a legitimate shot at winning it all, it’d be hard to say yes.
