At season's end, Manchester United's goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar will be retiring. His possible replacement could be Maarten Stekelenburg.

According to ESPN.com, Manchester United has put the Dutch goalkeeper of AFC Ajax at the top of its list.

United coach Rene Meulensteen also has confirmed that manager Sir Alex Ferguson is interested in the 28-year-old, who's in the final year of his contract.

"Stekelenburg is indeed the keeper who is at the top of our wanted list," Meulensteen said. "We naturally talk a lot among ourselves about who should replace van der Sar. Alex Ferguson has spoken about Stekelenburg with Edwin and that does not seem strange to me at all."

Stekelenberg is regarded as one of the best goalies in the world. In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he allowed six goals in seven games and held a 6-1 record.
