The off-road motorcycle circuit has lost one of the most popular and most successful drivers to date on Friday.
FoxSports.com reports that Nathan Woods, 32, died while practicing for the upcoming World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS).
Woods has been riding since the age of 7 but has competed professionally for the past nine years. The Paso Robles, Calif., driver has the most wins in the off-road series history, along with a gold medal at the ISDE, two WORCS championships (2004-05) and regular competition in EnduroCross.
“Today off-road racing lost one of the greatest off-road champions ever to throw a leg over a dirt bike,” said the WORCS website.
“He was airlifted to a hospital and pronounced dead after crashing on the motocross portion of the track,” reported the Taft Midway Driller, according to FoxSports.Nathan leaves behind his wife, Amanda, and sons, Nate and Braxton.
The first round of the WORC was canceled and a memorial lap was led by Wood’s wife and former mechanic Charles Jirsa in place of opening ceremonies, according to Dirt Bike Magazine.
