Mike Lowell may be out of the picture this time, but the Red Sox have finally obtained Rangers catcher Max Ramirez.
The team has announced that they've claimed Ramirez, a 26-year-old catcher, off of waivers. Ramirez, of course, was all but traded to Boston for Lowell prior to the 2010 season. That deal fell through over Texas' concerns about Lowell's nagging injuries, and the veteran third baseman ended his career in Boston, retiring after the season ended.
Ramirez spent time in both the majors and at Triple-A in 2010, with the majority of his time coming with the Rangers' affiliate in Oklahoma City. With the Redhawks, Ramirez hit .286 with three home runs and 29 RBIs. In 26 games with the Rangers, the right-handed hitter hit .217 with two home runs and eight RBIs.
To make room for Ramirez, the Sox designated pitcher Matt Fox for assignment. He was claimed off of waivers from the Twins on Sept. 9, throwing only 1 2/3 innings with Boston.
