Despite Fernando Torres‘ transfer request, Liverpool has rejected Chelsea bids for the Spanish superstar of £28 million and £32 million.
Now, though, Roman Abramovich is expected to up the offer to £40 million — in the form of £35 million and the highly-rated 21-year-old forward Daniel Sturridge, according to ESPN.co.uk.
This bid would represent a new record sum for a transfer in Premier League history.
Chelsea is desperate to improve, languishing 10 points off the pace in the league and in a veritable battle for the fourth Champions League spot. As a result, Abramovich is concentrated on improving the side, willing to break the bank for Torres and Benfica defender David Luiz for £25 million.
However, Liverpool has maintained that Torres will stay at Anfield.
“Fernando is under long-term contract and the club expect him to honour the commitment he made to Liverpool and its supporters when he signed the agreement.”
With just three days left in the January window, there is little time for pressure on the club to build, making it far difficult for Chelsea to poach Liverpool’s biggest star.
