Report: Evgeni Nabokov Signs One-Year Deal With Red Wings The homecoming for Evgeni Nabokov didn’t go quite as planned, as his stint in Russia came to an early close.

The beleaguered Kazakh will be joining the Detroit Red Wings courtesy of a $570,000 contract signed Thursday, according to TSN. The 35-year-old Nabokov will have to pass through the waiver wire before the deal becomes official.

The Red Wings (29-12-6) currently employ veteran net minder Chris Osgood, who is on the shelf for six to eight weeks after undergoing hernia surgery. Jimmy Howard has been the team’s premier goalie, posting a 23-7-3 record with a 2.83 GAA.

San Jose fans remember Nabokov as a fantastic regular season goalie that never could climb the Stanley Cup playoff mountain. His best season came during the 2007-08 campaign, where he won the Vezina Trophy with a stifling 2.14 GAA.
