The Celtics' corps of big men is getting a much-needed lift.

Just six months after undergoing ACL surgery, Kendrick Perkins is ready to return to the Celtics' active roster. Perkins was projected to return in mid-February, and recently eyed a Feb. 4, return date, but was feeling strong so he asked coach Doc Rivers if he could return for Tuesday's home matchup against the Cavs.

At first, Rivers was hesitant to allow Perkins to return so quickly, but the forward received the clearance needed from team trainer Ed Lacerte and team physician Dr. Brian McKeon. Rivers didn't hide his skepticism surrounding such an early return for Perk.

"After the practice, the doctors walked in and said he should play," Rivers said. "I don't mind changing my mind."

Perkins started working out on the court in late December and began full-contact activity in practice on Jan. 16. He hasn't played since Game 6 of the NBA Finals, where he tore his ACL against the Los Angeles Lakers.

His teammates are definitely happy to see him back in action, especially after watching his long recovery process.

"I'm excited," Ray Allen told reporters before Tuesday's game. "I've watched him on the sidelines for three, four months. I remember the day when he was having surgery. It just seems like such a long process, and I'm happy for him being able to get back on the floor."

Obviously, Perk won't be putting in maximum minutes against the Cavs, but Rivers is planning on putting him to work to prepare him for another playoff run.

"The more games he plays, the better he'll be by the time it's time for the playoffs," Rivers said. "So that's good for us."
