The story of Lowell, Mass., native Micky Ward continues a rich cinematic tradition of depictions of the sweet science by following in the fistprints of Rocky and Raging Bull.
Hockey hasn’t had as much success on the silver screen as boxing’s award winners, nor has hockey had as many movies dedicated to it as baseball. There have been countless efforts to portray the national pastime on film, and colleague Tony Lee has detailed the best of those offerings.
But while there may be a smaller catalog of films to choose from for hockey buffs, the sport’s celluloid contributions have been impressive. What follows is one man’s opinion of the greatest of those efforts, with a quick disclaimer. Those sequels to Slap Shot were never actually made, regardless of what evidence you may find in DVD bargain bins.
And I wish I could dismiss the Mighty Ducks series as easily, but it’s hard to deny their existence after an NHL team was named after them. But I can certainly keep those Disney atrocities to old-time hockey off my personal list of the all-time great hockey films.
