Andy Carroll, Luis Suarez to Fill Void Left by Fernando Torres as January Transfer Window Closes

7 p.m. ET: It’s officially February in England, and the transfer window has come and gone with Liverpool making the headlines.

An unhappy, under-performing Fernando Torres has left the club for a record £50 million for Chelsea, and a pair of highly talented young forwards — one a brutish target man who is perhaps already the Premier League’s biggest aerial threat, and another who scored more goals than anybody in Europe in 2009-10 — are on the way in. Throw in the Ryan Babel sale, and Liverpool spent just about nothing this window, and changed the side for the better. As for Charlie Adam, he would have been a great buy for Liverpool, but Blackpool simply wanted more than was reasonable for their captain.

Regardless, the January moves by FSG show a great deal of ambition — and a lot of faith in Kenny Dalglish.

The squad will be back in action on Wednesday against Stoke, with Suarez making his debut in Dalglish’s No. 7 shirt.

6:56 p.m. ET: Charlie Adam on staying at Bloomfield Road: “It’s been a crazy day. I’m still a Blackpool player and I want the Blackpool fans to know I’m totally committed to playing the best I can for the club, and I will do my best to help us achieve the highest possible league finish.”

6:54 p.m. ET: Torres on Chelsea: “It is the dream for every top class footballer to play at a top class club and now I can do that” — not exactly going to help out his Liverpool legacy.

6:53 p.m. ET: Harry says that Spurs’ bid for Adam was even accepted, and just fell short of a few signatures at the last moment. The bigger question: Where was Adam going to play for Spurs?

6:48 p.m. ET: It appears that Jozy Altidore will be on loan with Bursaspor, not Levante, contrary to previous reports.

6:45 p.m. ET: ESPN’s John Brewin on Charlie Adam, per Harry Redknapp: “Deal done supposedly, and fee agreed but then a couple of missing signatures killed it with minutes to spare. Makes one wonder why Liverpool could not get the deal done.” Spurs were apparently very close.

6:40 p.m. ET: Gabriel Obertain apparently put in a transfer request with Manchester United, but it was rejected, per Daily Mail.

6:25 p.m. ET: Arsenal has in fact made a significant move, signing Japanese teenager Ryo Miyaichi. He will stay on loan at Feyenoord through the end of the season, but will be a Gunner longterm.

6:16 p.m. ET: Arsenal sell Nacer Barazite to Vienna permanently, per ESPN.

6:10 p.m. ET: Zenit forward Sergei Kornilenko signs with Blackpool on loan — an amazing number of deals by the Seasiders.

6:04 p.m. ET: According to ESPN, Spurs has failed in their last-minute bid for Charlie Adam.

6:02 p.m. ET: Stephen Warnock is still a possibility for Liverpool, according to the BBC. The Luiz deal is good to go for Chelsea.

6 p.m. ET: The window has officially closed — though reports may continue to come in.

5:57 p.m. ET: With three minutes to go, Newcastle has lost another striker — loaning out Xisco to Deportivo.

5:54 p.m ET: Spurs are swooping in for a last-dash bid for Charlie Adam, says ESPN.

5:53 p.m. ET: Newcastle has upped the N’Zogbia bid to £12m, to no avail.

5:51 p.m. ET: Carroll has signed with Liverpool for 5 1/2 years. He will wear the No. 9.

5:49 p.m. ET: The Torres-Chelsea deal is official: £50m, £180k per week for 5 1/2 years. He will reportedly be available for selection this weekend when Liverpool visits.

5:44 p.m. ET: Rumor has it that Chelsea will pursue Johnny Heitinga in the 16 remaining minutes if the Luiz deal doesn’t happen — so, they won’t be.

5:40 p.m. ET: Twenty minutes left, and we’re still waiting for Carroll and Torres to go official.

5:33 p.m. ET: Jeffrey Bruma to Leicester from Chelsea for a loan is on, as is the Gudjohnsen to Fulham loan.

5:30 p.m. ET: Wigan has turned down a £10 million Newcastle bid for N’Zogbia.

5:25 p.m. ET: Newcastle is now making a late move to re-acquire Charles N’Zogbia from Wigan says Sky — nice.

5:23 p.m. ET: Man City must really like having Shaun Wright-Phillips sit on the bench. They turned down loan bids from Newcastle, Bolton, Portsmouth, West Ham and Everton today, per Guardian.

5:19 p.m. ET: Word seems to be that Ashley Young will be staying at Villa Park. The Dos Santos-Racing loan deal is official, per BBC.

5:15 p.m. ET: Apostolos Vellios will in fact move to Everton from Thessaloniki.

5:11 p.m. ET: Wigan’s fee for Sammon was £600,000.

5:10 p.m. ET: Still waiting for official confirmation of the Luiz, Carroll and Torres deals — and for a final twist in the Adam and Young sagas. Neither looks to be in the cards, though. Given such, Liverpool will have sold £56 million and bought £57 million in players — not really what you’d call “new investment,” but the side is better with Suarez and Carroll up top.

5 p.m. ET: One hour left until the transfer window ends.

4:59 p.m. ET: Racing Santander are closing in on a loan deal for Spurs’ Giovani Dos Santos — who said Harry wouldn’t do anything?

4:54 p.m. ET: Italian reports say Federico Marchetti has agreed to move from Cagliari to Man City on loan. Shay Given, though, still hasn’t found a way out.

4:50 p.m. ET: More America news: Jozy Altidore joining La Liga side Levante on loan from Villareal.

4:44 p.m. ET: With Adam looking off the table, interest in Ashley Young is rekindling, and a deal may be able to get done. The number being floated is £3m between the sides.

4:38 p.m. ET: Things look to be slowing down as we wait for the Torres, Luiz and Carroll deals to go through. This is about the biggest thing happening right now.

Jack Wilshere: “BREAKING TRANSFER NEWS: I have just moved from the sofa to my bed!!”

4:35 p.m. ET: Hibernian have signed Czech keeper Jakub Divis on a 12-month loan.

4:33 p.m. ET: Arsenal defender Gavin Hoyte is staying at Lincoln until season’s end.

4:30 p.m. ET: The current viral meme is that Bolton accidentally posted a picture of Danny Welbeck in their announcement of the Sturridge loan signing.

Guardian says that Liverpool offered £8m and £10m for Adam, but that Blackpool is holding out for £14.

4:25 p.m. ET: You can apparently go on LFC.tv and get your official Suarez No. 7 shirt already.

4:19 p.m. ET: Speaking of Blackpool, they’ve now signed Southampton forward Jason Puncheon. They’ve made three acquisitions today — how are they funding this if not by selling Adam?

4:17 p.m. ET: Sky is reporting that Charlie Adam will stay at Blackpool. Ben Smith of the Times, though, says that agents are still working on it.

4:10 p.m. ET: Spurs getting ripped hard for making nothing happen — only a bid for Phil Neville. Everton getting ripped hard too — for doing nothing but keeping Phil Neville.

4:03 p.m. ET: Despite earlier reports that the Luiz-Chelsea deal may not happen, it now appears to be set.

4 p.m. ET: Two more hours left in the window, and not much new to report about Charlie Adam except that he is still in Blackpool.

3:55 p.m. ET: Sky Bet still has Charlie Adam at 1-10 to sign with Liverpool, and they even have Ashley Young at even money. That, though, probably detracts from the market’s credibility.

3:51 p.m. ET: Another American is heading to England, with 18-year-old Erik Opsahl apparently going to Reading until season’s end. Rare Gunners news: Kyle Bartley heading from Arsenal to Rangers on loan.

3:49 p.m. ET: Leicester City signing keeper Ricardo on loan deal.

3:47 p.m. ET: Official LFC statement:

“Luis Suarez has today completed his transfer from Ajax to Liverpool FC and signed a 5 and a half-year-deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2016. The club agreed a fee of up to 26.5million Euros with Ajax for the transfer of the Uruguayan international on Friday. The deal was subject to the completion of a medical, which the player has now passed. Luis Suarez will wear the No.7 shirt for Liverpool.”

3:45 p.m. ET: It’s official. Luis Suarez has signed a 5 1/2 year deal with Liverpool. He’ll be no. 7.

3:39 p.m. ET: Harry says nothing is happening at White Hat Lane, per Guardian. Harry also says that Crouch won’t go anywhere.

3:36 p.m. ET: Amazing how quickly things happen on deadline day — Sturridge is in at Bolton on loan, but Elmander will be staying. The two of them should fit together well.

3:33 p.m. ET: Rumors of Elmander to Newcastle are heating up, meaning the following seem likely happen:

Liverpool sells Torres to Chelsea.

Chelsea loans Sturridge to Bolton.

Bolton sells Elmander to Newcastle.

Newcastle sells Carroll to Liverpool.

Well, there ya go.

3:25 p.m. ET: talkSPORT is reporting that the Luiz-Chelsea deal may again be on the rocks.

3:20 p.m. ET: Things have slowed down a bit — except on Carlton Cole’s Twitter:

“Just checked my Twitter! It’s crazy on here. I’ve said I was chilling at home with my feet up and I still am!” he says.

3:09 p.m. ET: Time to back-track again. Eidur Gudjonsson to Fulham is now rumored, and he’s still at the training ground.

3:05 p.m. ET: Kenny Dalglish and staff have left Melwood — this may mean nothing, but this may not bode so well for the suddenly taking-a-while Adam deal.

3:01 p.m. ET: Crystal Palace have signed Derby’s Dean Moxey for an undisclosed fee.

3 p.m. ET: We are now at the three-hour mark — though we all know that things can still go down after-hours. ESPN saying that Stephen Warnock is still a possibility.

2:58 p.m. ET: Tony Pulis and Harry Redknapp are still at their training grounds, for whatever that is worth.

2:54 p.m. ET: The Ireland-Newcastle deal has happened, despite the earlier reports of the failed physical.

2:52 p.m. ET: Eidur Gudjonsson staying at Stoke, per Icelandic press.

2:49 p.m. ET: Liverpool apparently inquired about Man City’s Micah Richards, but was rebuffed, per Sky.

2:45 p.m. ET: Avram Grant has claimed that Carlton Cole will be staying put, despite his emergence as a Carroll replacement. West Ham may make one deal, he also says. ESPN claims that Milan Jovanovic has been linked to a Newcastle move — given the situations at Anfield and St. James’ Park.

2:40 p.m. ET: Sunderland rejects a bid by Blackpool to take Jack Colback on loan, per Sky. The Diouf to Rangers deal is apparently getting closer.

2:34 p.m. ET: Alan Shearer on BBC 5Live: “Off the field he has been in trouble once or twice before – that would be the major area of concern for me. I spoke to Kenny months ago before he even came to Liverpool about the potential of Carroll. Kenny got myself and Chris Sutton and myself and Mike Newell together at Blackburn and he probably sees Carroll and Suarez as a similar partnership – both can score goals. Andy Carroll is unplayable on his day. We might see Charlie Adam there and with Steven Gerrard and his tremendous right foot – if you get balls into box for those guys it will be a hell of a partnership.”

2:32p.m. ET: For the sake of updating the odds, Charlie Adam is now 1-10 to sign with Liverpool, so even if it’s not done, it looks good.

2:30 p.m. ET: Guardian is saying Guisseppe Rossi isn’t going anywhere, which begs the question: What is Harry going to do?

3:30 left in the window.

2:28 p.m. ET: Torres to Chelsea for £50 million is now official, according to just about every source.

2:24 p.m. ET: Former Liverpool target Amauri, who rejected bids from West Brom and Fulham, is reportedly heading to Parma — because that’s so much better…

2:20 p.m. ET: Rumors of Newcastle making a big bid for Nicklas Bendtner are beginning to surface.

2:18 p.m. ET: ESPN has said that Ashley Young to Liverpool is officially dead.

2:12 p.m. ET: Even with the Luiz deal, Chelsea doesn’t appear to be sending Jeffrey Bruma to West Brom on loan, per BBC.

2:08 p.m. ET: Liverpool supporter Caroline Wozniacki has chimed in: “Need to get used to not seeing Torres in the red shirt anymore 🙁 but I am sure Suarez and Carroll in front will be a good pair.”

2:05 p.m. ET: Rangers apparently are in talks with Blackburn about El-Hadji Diouf for a loan deal.

2 p.m. ET: Four hours left in the window. Andy Carroll has arrived at Liverpool’s training ground to massive fanfare. The Torres deal seems pretty much set, while the Adam deal is moving forward, but far from a sure thing at the present.

1:56 p.m. ET: A couple notes on Chelsea: They are spending over £70 million today — about exactly what the club lost in 2010, and don’t forget that Liverpool goes to Stamford Bridge this weekend.

1:53 p.m. ET: Wigan is reportedly close to signing Connor Sammon from Kilmarnock. Ian Holloway on Andy Reid: “dinky-doo little player and perfect for us” — hilarious, considering the American Andy Reid.

1:45 p.m. ET: Blackburn has signed Ruben Rochina from Barca. Rumors of Man United matching Liverpool’s bids for Adam are surfacing, but they are not confirmed. According to the Guardian, Carroll’s wages will spike from 27k to 80k per week. Newcastle is now being linked to Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch for Carroll replacements.

1:35 p.m. ET: BBC is now reporting that Liverpool and Chelsea have agreed over Fernando Torres’ fee.

1:30 p.m. ET: Sky is now also claiming that Charlie Adam is still in Blackpool with his agent — not to say the deal is suddenly unlikely.

1:28 p.m. ET: Inter’s Davide Santon off to Cesena, per ESPN — an odd move considering many expected Santon to be off to a huge mega-club. Luiz deal is apparently £21m, some deferred plus Nemanja Matic.

1:24 p.m. ET: Rumor has it in the Swedish press that Johan Elmander of Bolton is Newcastle’s potential Carroll replacement. He’s been in good form, is soon out of contract, and the Trotters need money and are about to get Sturridge on loan. It adds up.

1:20 p.m. ET: Inter has added defender Yuto Nagatomo of Asian champs Japan on loan and Feyenoord’s striker Luc Castaignos. Daily Mail has Torres to Chelsea as a done deal. Also, they are reporting that the David Luiz deal for £25 million from Benfica is on.

1:15 p.m. ET: Per BBC, Rangers will get 10 percent of any Adam fee, and Holloway will get a cut too — no wonder he wanted to drive the price up so much.

1:10 p.m. ET: Daily Mail is now pulling back somewhat on the Adam deal, saying nothing has been agreed to yet.

1:06 p.m. ET: More sources are now reporting that Torres to Chelsea is a done deal.

1:04 p.m. ET: ESPN is now reporting that Carroll and LFC have agreed to terms — that was quick.

1 p.m. ET: Jason Burt is reporting that a £45 million + 5 million in add-ons deal for Torres has been agreed to. Rumor also has it that Carroll has already agreed to personal terms with Liverpool.

12:55 p.m. ET: Rory Smith is now disputing the £14 million Adam fee in favor of one closer to £8 million.

12:50 p.m. ET: The Danny Ayala to Derby move seems to be off due to a hamstring injury. On the other hand, Fernando Torres is to rumored to have passed his Chelsea physical.

12:45 p.m. ET: The Guardian is reporting that the Liverpool-Blackpool deal for Adam is worth £14 million. So, add it all up and Liverpool has spent £72 million so far.

12:42 p.m. ET: More from Houllier: Ashley Young is 100% staying and Michael Bradley is a done deal.

12:40 p.m. ET: On a less significant front, Frank Nouble is heading to Barnsley on loan from West Ham.

12:36 p.m. ET: Houllier saying that Ireland-Newcastle deal is still on despite failed physical.

12:30 p.m. ET: Charlie Adam is apparently now on his way to Liverpool, perhaps for a medical. Sky Sports says Blackpool has accepted Liverpool’s bid.

12:23 p.m. ET: Newcastle has now reportedly agreed to the £35 million Carroll sale with “a heavy heart.”

12:17 p.m. ET: Ben Smith of the Times is reporting that Carroll has submitted a transfer request and that the deal will happen.

12:15 p.m. ET: Sportsmail is saying that Liverpool will push the Carroll deal through before the window shuts, for what that’s worth.

12:13 p.m. ET: Can’t omit that Wolfsburg also bought Patrick Helmes from Leverkeusen — big day, kind of.

12:11 p.m. ET: Liverpool has apparently rejected bids from Gremio and Villareal for Lucas.

12:08 p.m. ET: BBC has confirmed that Liverpool’s £35 million bid was rejected, but the two sides are still working out a deal, and Carroll is traveling to Liverpool.

12:01 p.m. ET: Juve sign Alessandro Matri from Cagliari, per the Italian media.

12 p.m. ET: Leeds gets Man City reserve keeper David Gonzalez on loan. As for Shay Given, he stills seems pretty much stuck at Eastlands. Six hours remaining for deals.

11:56 a.m. ET: Bolton is nearing an agreement with Chelsea for Daniel Sturridge on loan.

11:49 a.m. ET: Stoke’s Tuncay going to Wolfsburg. Zoltan Gera and Sebastian Larssen won’t be moving.

11:48 a.m. ET: Liverpool has signed England U-17 Conor Thomas of Coventry on loan with a view to buy at season’s end.

11:45 a.m. ET: Sources are downplaying the Adam to United rumors. Carroll is still physically on his way to Liverpool, though reports are conflicting about the deal.

11:44 a.m. ET: A Sky report says that Newcastle has now rejected Liverpool’s Carroll bid. This couldn’t have anything to do with the Ireland physical, could it?

11:40 a.m. ET: The Aston Villa front seems pretty quiet regarding Young and Warnock, despite reports of talks between Henry and Lerner.

11:37 a.m. ET: Real Madrid is apparently loaning David Mateos to AEK Athens for the remainder of the season.

11:35 a.m. ET: The Diego Forlan  £17 million bid from Spurs is now said to be real. I’d expect Harry to get something major done today.

11:33 a.m. ET: Sky says that the Andy Carroll deal has a clause that could make it worth up to £40 million.

11:30 a.m. ET: From the BBC transfer Live Blog:

According to Opta, in the Premier League this season, Carroll has more goals than Torres (11 to nine), more assists (three to two) and the time lapse between goals is less (148 mins per goal compared to 211 mins per goal). The Newcastle striker’s shooting accuracy is worse than Torres however, with 43% of his shots hitting the target compared to the Spaniard’s 52%.

11:27 a.m. ET: Man United kid Cameron Stewart making his loan to Hull a permanent move — not that that has anything to do with Charlie Adam.

11:25 a.m. ET: Blackpool, by far the most active team, are now in talks with Zenit Striker about Sergei Kornilenko — more justification for losing Adam?

11:24 a.m. ET: The Liverpool odds on Adam are 5-2, well behind United’s 1-4. Darron Gibson would apparently be a makeweight.

11:21 a.m. ET: Paul Konchesky on his move to Forest: “I’m very excited about joining Forest. It’s a new challenge and a big challenge for me as well. It doesn’t bother me that I’m dropping down to the Championship because I just want to play football, that’s what I love doing.”

11:17 a.m. ET: Obafemi Martens has joined Birmingham on loan from Rubin Kazan. USA international Robbie Findley has signed with Nottingham Forest from Real Salt Lake.

11:13 a.m. ET: For what it’s worth, Freddy Adu is being loaned out by Benfica to Rizespor of Turkey. He makes Greg Oden look like a good buy.

11:11 a.m. ET: Steve McLaren’s Wolfsburg is apparently adding Jan Polak from Anderlecht.

11:09 a.m. ET: Everton potentially signing Apostolos Vellios from Greece.

11:06 a.m. ET: More on Adam — Caught Offside and Manchester Evening News are saying Charlie to United for £14 million. Still, no real confirmed stories.

11:04 a.m. ET: The bookmakers have gone massively in the direction of United buying Charlie Adam today — odds moved from 8-1 to 1-4, per Sky.

11 a.m. ET: The Twitter post of the moment is “Liverpool looking to spend another £25 million on Charlie Adam and Ashley Young.” There’s no source, but it’s a nice idea.

10:53 a.m. ET: Stephen Ireland has reportedly failed his medical at Newcastle — deal off. Michael Bradley to Aston Villas is just about official.

10:50 a.m. ET: Birmingham has yet to receive an offer for Sebastian Larssen from Man City. Bristol signs Andy Keogh from Wolves.

10:47 a.m. ET: Blackpool is ignoring calls from Liverpool about Charlie Adam, but admits an improved offer has been made.

”He’s my player and that is the situation at the moment,” said Holloway. ”I spoke to Kenny Dalglish the other day and he made an improved offer. I talked to the chairman about it and he turned it down. Damien Comolli has now tried to contact Karl but he hasn’t returned his calls. He hasn’t got to has he? It’s pretty rude isn’t it but if we run out of time…”

10:44 a.m. ET: The Twitterverse is now spreading Ashley Young target rumors again.

10:42 a.m. ET: Liverpool target Yann M’Vila will not be moving from France today, per BBC.

10:40 a.m. ET: Andy Carroll now reportedly on his way to Liverpool, physically speaking, maybe in an F-22 Raptor?

Chelsea has loaned out Jacob Mellis to Barnsley.

10:33 a.m. ET: As happens on deadline day, BBC now reports that there is no bid for Diego Forlan.

10:30 a.m. ET:  Spurs has reportedly bid £17 million for Diego Forlan.

10:26 a.m. ET: Houllier says Ashley Young is not for sale. We’ll see.

10:25 a.m. ET: Not totally new news, but Seb Larssen likely on the way to Man City on loan from Birmingham. Why? Probably because City need to have another good midfielder who never plays — the Adam Johnson void.

10:17 a.m. ET: Nothing new on the Charlie Adam-Liverpool front according to Ian Holloway. Though Liverpool’s Carroll bombshell makes more spending less likely, Blackpool’s Reid and Beattie moves imply that they are bracing to sell him.

10:13 a.m. ET: The Torres deal being worked out is apparently back to £50 million, not £45 million as reported for a while.

10:11 a.m. ET: Liverpool is still maintaining that no agreement has yet been made with Chelsea regarding Torres, but it’s nearly impossible to believe he won’t be on the way out with Carroll coming in. Suarez isn’t a backup.

10:08 a.m ET: Wigan is saying that there is nothing new on the Charles N’Zogbia front, and the Ashley Young front seems to have gone cold today as well. Liverpool has now spent more than it has sold this window, but owners may be looking to make a huge statement.

10:05 a.m. ET: Spending £35 million on Carroll and £23 million on Suarez means Liverpool will have spent a net £12 million to replace Torres, if he is sold for £45 million. Ultimately, I think that they have upgraded. Hate to say it, but Torres may never be Torres again.

Suarez seems like a sure thing, and Carroll has all the upside in the world — a potential Rooney, but the short track record and other issues speak for themselves.

10 a.m. ET: Wow, Liverpool has signed Andy Carroll for £35 million, according to the Guardian.

9:57 a.m. ET: Liverpool has made a second offer for Andy Carroll according to BBC, potentially the £35 million asking price, or close.

9:55 a.m. ET: Chelsea bid for Torres is now believed to be cash only. Image rights and wages are said to be the remaining issues standing in the way at the present.

9:51 a.m. ET: Torres is in Liverpool, but is prepared to take the trip to Chelsea later today. The bookmakers are moving drastically in the direction of him being on his way out.

9:50 a.m. ET: Blackpool has moved for James Beattie and Andy Reid, implying that the club is working to replace Charlie Adam. As far as Torres alternatives go, rumors about Nicklas Bendtner, Mario Gomez, Karim Benzema have all been floated.

9:45 a.m. ET: Fernando Torres now rumored to still be in Liverpool as teams negotiate transfer, not in helicopter, car or nearing Chelsea grounds as previously reported.

Newcastle, after moving their news conference back, has now canceled it entirely, bringing rise to rumors about Andy Carrol. The club reportedly wants £35 million.

Chelsea deal for Torres is reportedly a £45 million move.
