Boggs will be inducted into the International League's Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2011, the league announced on Tuesday. Boggs joins fellow IL and MLB standouts Cal Ripken Jr. and Steve Balboni as the first class elected by a vote of current Hall of Fame members. Longtime executives, media members and broadcasters also casted votes toward the 2011 Hall of Fame tally.
Boggs spent two years with the PawSox, nearly posting back-to-back batting titles in the International League. The third baseman posted a .335 batting average in 1981, following up his 1980 season where he posted a .306 average. He finished his IL career with 295 hits and 105 RBIs before he was called up to the big club in Boston.
With the Red Sox, Boggs won five American League batting titles, including four consecutive titles from 1985-88. He remains the only baseball player in Major League history to collect 200 hits and scor 100 runs in seven consecutive seasons.
Boggs is one of four former Pawtucket players that is currently in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, along with Jim Rice, Dennis Eckersley and Carlton Fisk.
As a member of the PawSox, Boggs played in the longest game in professional baseball history against Cal Ripken Jr. and the Rochester Red Wings in 1981. The game lasted eight hours and 25 minutes at McCoy Stadium, with Pawtucket earning the 3-2 victory in the 33rd inning.
