The 16th hole at the TPC Scottsdale in Arizona is one, if not, the most raucous hole in all of golf. When local boy Billy Mayfair nearly aced No. 16 while honoring a local hero, the place near exploded.
Mayfair honored former Arizona State Sun Devils and Arizona Cardinals safety Pat Tillman by wearing the No. 42 Sun Devil jersey while he played the 16th on Saturday. Tillman, of course, left a career in the NFL to serve his country in the Army before dying in Afghanistan in 2004.
While Mayfair narrowly missed the cut at the Waste Management Phoenix Open, he certainly made his impact with the tribute. Mayfair narrowly missed making it a magical moment as he used a 9-iron on the 150-yard par 3 that lipped out of the hole, just narrowly missing a hole-in-one.
"At first they were just cheering ASU, ASU," Mayfair told Golf.com, "but when they saw Tillman on the back, they started chanting, 'Tillman, Tillman, Tillman.' I think even any University of Arizona people would've been cheering. Pat was a hero, no doubt about it."
