While it may not have been with the same glitz and glamor that came with the acquisitions of Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez, the Red Sox spent a lot of time this offseason stockpiling arms in the bullpen.

The Sox brought in pitchers like Dan Wheeler and Bobby Jenks to help shore up the back end of the pen, a spot held down last year by Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon. With those two in place, Hall of Famer Peter Gammons has an idea about what the Sox could do with Bard.

Move him to the starting rotation.

“I don’t think there’s any reason why you couldn’t have for three years — 2012, ’13, ’14 — you couldn’t have [Clay] Buchholz, [Jon] Lester, Bard, three of the best starters in the American League in there throwing close to 700 innings a year for those three years. That would be a phenomenal rotation.”

Bard was a starter in college at the University of North Carolina, but was moved to the bullpen while making his ascent through the Red Sox organization.
