Fernando Torres didn't exactly do his best to part ways with Liverpool amicably, spending the first half of the season pouting and playing at half speed for the Reds and then declaring that he had finally been granted his wish of going to "play in one of the top level clubs" upon his transfer to Chelsea.
While he did backtrack to an extent on Tuesday, the day after his record transfer to Stamford Bridge, he also threw the gauntlet down — saying that he hopes to score against the Reds come Sunday, according to the Guardian.
"I will do my best for Chelsea and hopefully I can score," he said of the matchup that is "like destiny."
He wasn't, however, overjoyed about facing his former club, for whom he had nice things to say on Tuesday.
"It is not perfect for me but we will see what happens and I only have good words about Liverpool. They made me a top player and gave me the chance to play at the top level," he remarked. "I will never say anything bad about Liverpool. I have been very happy there, but now the history is different and I am playing for Chelsea."
Torres, though, did admit that he has been wanting to leave since the summer — which couldn't have been more obvious if you watched him play.
"I felt from last summer that I needed to do a step forward in my career and for my ambition as a footballer," he said, again reiterating the perceived jump to a bigger club. "I am joining a team that is at the top level. There is not another level after Chelsea."
Some of his desire for a transfer stemmed from his desire for success in the Champions League and from the bitter memory of falling in the 2008 Champions League semifinal to Chelsea.
"I have a very bad memory of the semi-final of the Champions League in my first season in England when they beat us and they played the final and not us. It was a frustrating day for me but hopefully now I am here we can go through to the final together and win," he said.
"The Champions League is a big ambition and all the footballers want to play in it. It is a very important competition. But also Chelsea have the chance every season to win all the trophies that they play for, so when you have the chance to play in a team like this, you cannot say no."
Torres had just nine goals in 26 appearances this season for Liverpool. He has already been replaced by Andy Carroll in the No. 9 shirt for the Reds.
