After 15 years of writing for ESPN.com, baseball writer Rob Neyer has announced his departure from the site, and has joined the blog network, SB Nation.
Neyer didn’t wait long to debut his first column for SB Nation, as it ran less than 24 hours after his final post for ESPN on Monday. In that first article, Neyer describes his passion for writing, and how his career brought him to SB Nation, where they embrace the blurred lines between “us and them.”
The “us” Neyer refers to is the writers, and the “them” are the readers. Now, in the age of the Internet, the contact between writers and readers has become much closer than in years past, and Neyer has embraced that connection throughout his career.
“There are a lot of things to love about SB Nation, which is why I’m here. But among them is that they — excuse me, we — don’t see us as us and you as them,” Neyer wrote.” We’ve got bloggers who most professional writers probably consider them … but we know better.
“We know that some of our writers are every bit as talented and knowledgeable as anyone you’ll find working for newspapers or the Big Boy websites. We also know that today’s readers are tomorrow’s writers, and that often the only difference is opportunity.”
Neyer, who started his career under influential baseball statistician Bill James, wrote a daily blog for ESPN, called the SweetSpot. He is also the author of six baseball books, including Feeding the Green Monster, an e-book about his summer spent watching the Red Sox in Boston.
