The New York Yankees had one of the more memorable offseasons in recent history. Unfortunately for Yankees fans, the memories were not so pleasant.
The Yankees failed to lure any top-tier free agents this winter, most notably coming up short in the Cliff Lee sweepstakes. Combined with the retirement of playoff workhorse Andy Pettitte, New York will begin the season with a less than ideal rotation which features C.C. Sabathia as the lone, consistently great starter.
This lack of depth in the rotation could have pitcher Joba Chamberlain's role changing, yet again. For now, however, the Yankees have announced that Chamberlain will remain in the bullpen, SI.com reports. The decision should help bolster the bullpen, which also welcomes ex-Tampa Bay Ray Rafael Soriano to the mix.
When asked about his role as a reliever, Chamberlain was direct and positive.
"I've got to embrace it and try to do the best I can to help us win another championship."
He also spoke of the starter/reliever debate, saying "I don't know if that debate is ever going to stop … if it comes up in the future, then I'll answer that question."
Chamberlain will likely have a tough time re-acclimating to the bullpen, as he is coming off a rough 2010 where he posted a 4.40 ERA and a 3-4 record in 73 appearances. Many point to the uncertainty of his role on the team as a primary reason for his inconsistencies.
