Luis Suarez may have had similar words to Fernando Torres regarding his move to what he perceives as a bigger club, but while the Spaniard managed to be derisive in the process, Suarez couldn't have been more gracious toward everybody in Amsterdam, even causing Ajax's managing director to shower him with praise.
"Hello everyone. As you guys know from the Press, my transfer to Liverpool is now official. I want to thank Ajax for those wonderful 3 years and a half I spent in Amsterdam, where I've been so happy and [proud] to wear and defend Ajax colours," he wrote on his official website.
"Special thanks to all my fans for supporting me and to all people who helped me during [the] last years. I will always have you guys in my heart.
"I am starting a new adventure now with a very important club. I want to thank them for the strong effort they've done to count on me. I am going to work hard day by day to give them back the trust they have in me. Thank you everybody. C'mon Liverpool."
In fact, while Torres may believe that Chelsea is a level above Liverpool, Suarez couldn't disagree more.
"For me, this is the most important club not just in England but the whole world," he said.
Suarez also proclaimed that he would give his very best to Liverpool — something Torres arguably wasn't doing — and to bring trophies to Anfield.
"My aim is to work, to show the fans how hard I am ready to work. I want to put in lots of effort, to show people my capabilities," he said, according to Sky Sports.
"First of all, I want to try to play as many games as possible and help us move up the table.
"My ambitions for the future are to do my very best for Liverpool, to try to learn more about English football to become a champion."
Suarez, in fact, considers such an opportunity a dream.
"Liverpool is a very famous club, the most famous club in England, and I watched Liverpool and English football as a boy," he said. "It's a dream to be able to come and play here. I had a wonderful time in Ajax and I will miss them, but that's football."
Ajax managing director Rik van den Boog, evidencing the amicable departure, tipped the 24-year-old Uruguyan for big things at Liverpool.
"Luis is going to bring the place alive because he is a street fighter," Van den Boog said.
"He arrived here with a decent reputation but he was not a big player then. In the dressing room he soon stood up and became a leader. That's why he was special. When he goes on his travels to South America he always rushes back. Suarez is back on the training pitch the next morning when he has just flown around half the world for a game for Uruguay. He immediately puts his focus on his club again. We'll remember him for his incredible amount of goals and what he has done for the club."
Suarez could debut Wednesday against Stoke.
