The Patriots announced Monday night that they placed their franchise tag on left guard Logan Mankins with the intention to sign him to a long-term extension, much like they did last year with defensive lineman Vince Wilfork, who they mentioned by name in the statement.

“Logan Mankins is a tremendous player,” the statement read. “He has been a fixture on our offensive line since we drafted him in the first round of the 2005 NFL Draft, and he remains an important part of our future plans. Unfortunately, we have not been able to reach a long-term agreement, despite many attempts and proposals by both sides. That remains our objective in utilizing the franchise designation and we are hopeful that Logan will be a Patriot for many years to come.”

The statement is a good sign that the Patriots have said they’re still working toward an extension with Mankins, who is very likely unhappy with the franchise tag, which can be revoked if the two sides reach a deal.
