NEW YORK – Pete Sampras is back at No. 1, returning to the World TeamTennis Pro League after being picked first overall in the marquee player draft by the Newport Beach Breakers.

Sampras, who finished a record six seasons atop the ATP rankings, last played WTT in 2007.

He's one of 10 current or past No. 1-ranked players who were in Tuesday's draft, including sisters Venus and Serena Williams – both returning to the Washington Kastles.

Reigning U.S. and Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters, who returned to the top of the WTA rankings this week, went to the New York Sportimes.

Surprise 2009 U.S. Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin was the No. 2 overall pick, going to the Philadelphia Freedoms.

The league schedule runs July 4-24.
