Editor's note: Every Saturday, NESN.com Red Sox reporter Tony Lee will look at Boston's competition in the AL East.

In the year after he was hit hard, Shields essentially gets a promotion, moving into Matt Garza's No. 2 starter role. Leading the league in hits allowed, runs allowed and home runs allowed, as he did in 2010, won't cut it anymore.

The Rays have a Cy Young Award candidate in David Price and an intriguing back end of the rotation in Wade Davis, Jeff Niemann and Jeremy Hellickson. The man they call "Big Game James" (for some reason) needs to have a few more big games for the Rays to have a chance.
