FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Red Sox clubhouse at the player development complex was pretty bare long before noon on Friday. Many of the players were already on the course.

As many as 25 players, as well as coaches, front office staff and former stars, are taking part in the 18th Annual Boston Red Sox Children's Hospital Celebrity Classic at the Forest Country Club in South Fort Myers. All of the proceeds raised through the event will help fund an expansion of The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida.

The expansion will provide "extensive medical subspecialty treatments and state-of-the-art lifesaving care for the children of Southwest Florida," according to a release by the team.

Tim Wakefield, the winner of the 2011 Roberto Clemente Award and a tireless worker for children in need, is the honorary chair of the event.
