Report: Patriots to Place Franchise Tag on Logan Mankins

The Patriots' saga with All-Pro left guard Logan Mankins has been boiling for more than a year. According to a new report, it'll continue for at least one more.

The team "definitely" plans to use its franchise tag on Mankins, according to the Boston Herald's Ian Rapoport.

It's important to note that while teams are allowed to place the tag on players, there's no guarantee that a franchise tag will stick when (if) the owners and players association reach an agreement on a new collective-bargaining agreement. That means players that are tagged during the window this month could ultimately be granted free agency if the new CBA does not allow teams to franchise players.

It's a somewhat surprising move for New England, as the franchise tag salary scale applies to all linemen, meaning those hefty salaries for left tackles and centers will determine Mankins' pay.

Mankins, who sat out for nearly half of the season in 2010, stated before the Pro Bowl that he would be upset if the franchise tag was placed on him. As noted by Rapoport, there is a chance, however small, that the team could be making the move simply to extend a negotiating period with Mankins.
