The B’s sent forward Blake Wheeler and defenseman Mark Stuart to Atlanta in exchange for Rich Peverley and Boris Valabik. Just moments later, the team announced the acquisition of Tomas Kaberle from the Maple Leafs for prospect Joe Colborne and draft picks.
Peverley notched a career-high 55 points in Atlanta last season while Valabik, the 10th overall pick in the 2004 draft, has played the entire season with the Chicago Wolves of the AHL this year.
Kaberle has three goals and 35 assists for the Leafs this year, his 13th year with the team.
This certainly isn’t the biggest deal Chiarelli has finagled, as the boss pulled off what appears to be one of the most lopsided trades in recent Bruins history two years ago. It was then when the Bruins sent Phil Kessel to the Maple Leafs for a pair of first-round picks (as well as a second-round pick). Tyler Seguin was selected with one of those picks with the No. 2 overall pick last year and the B’s have another first-round pick to dangle at the trade deadline, should they chose to make a strong push in the playoffs this year.
While the GM has received plenty of criticism for his moves (or lack thereof), Chiarelli has been a key contributor to the B’s recent success. What are your thoughts?
