Don Cherry Addresses Zdeno Chara Hit on Max Pacioretty, Agrees With League's Decision Former Bruins coach and current hockey analyst Don Cherry made some waves in Boston earlier this season when he blasted Andrew Ference for commenting on a hit by teammate Daniel Paille. Cherry was talking Bruins again on Saturday night, only this time, he was in Boston’s corner 100 percent.

Cherry weighed in on the topic that doesn’t seem to die — Zdeno Chara‘s hit on Max Pacrioretty from earlier in the week. Talking on his “Coach’s Corner” segment on Hockey Night in Canada, Cherry expressed his approval that the league did not discipline Chara for his hit that left Pacioretty with a serious concussion and a fractured vertebrae.

“Here’s a guy, 6-foot-9, 260 pounds … for 13 years, he’s never been suspended,” Cherry said. “He’s never tried to hurt guys. If he tried to hurt guys, he’d kill ’em at that size.

“You can’t give him three or four games. You give him 20 games, or you give him none. You can’t be a little guilty.”

Cherry also went on to talk about the dangers of a hit like that.

“Dangerous hit? He was just taking the guy out,” Cherry added. “If you take a shot, and you hit a guy in the head, you shot the puck and you injured him, and therefore, you’re guilty? Absolute nonsense. You either give him 20 games or you give him none.”

Cherry also pointed to compiled clips of roughly 20 similar hits to the Chara one with players being driven into the stanchion. He was quick to point out that of all of the hits shown, no one was suspended.
