Former Liverpool Keeper Nikolay Mihaylov Claims Pepe Reina Has Wanted Out of Anfield for Years

Despite being signed by Liverpool in 2007, goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov never played at Anfield.

Still, he claims to have inside information from his agent about fellow Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina, according to ESPN.

"I know from my agent Pepe Reina wants to go back to Spain," he said. "His desire dates back one or two years. He's one of the best keepers in the world but his form is not as it should be in a club like Liverpool."

Reina has been noncommital about his Liverpool future, but he has been most heavily linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester United, not a return to Spain.

Mihaylov, who currently plays for Twente, believes that he still has the option to return to Anfield, given that he no longer would be subject to the work permit issues that previously barred him from playing.

"Liverpool are a huge club," he told Darik Radio. "It wasn't possible to get a work visa when I went there but now there'll be no such problems because I'm playing regularly in the national team."

"I think it [the option to re-sign] 's absolutely real. The option was made when Rafa Benitez was in charge."

It does seem, perhaps, that Mihaylov is posturing for an Anfield return if Reina does in fact want out.

While Reina has maintained that Champions League football is important to him, he has repeatedly stated that he will make decisions about his future after the season.
