FORT MYERS, Fla. — Josh Beckett will skip a turn in the rotation due to the concussion he suffered earlier in the week.
Beckett, who was hit in the head with a ball during batting practice on Monday, was scheduled to go Thursday against Philadelphia and Cole Hamels. He has been able to resume physical activity, but will not get into a game until Tuesday, in all likelihood.
"It means he's allowed to do some activity," manager Terry Francona said of Beckett passing some baseline testing. "We'll still monitor his activity. He'll do some biking, some light throwing and see how he progresses from there. He's not going to pitch tomorrow and what we'll do is just keep him on his schedule."
Prospect Stolmy Pimentel, who was already scheduled to throw in the game, will take Beckett's spot.
Essentially, Beckett will only miss one day of throwing and perhaps a side session, so it shouldn't set him back too much, Francona said. However, the progression to the next outing is up in the air.
"How he gets to that next start is up to him," Francona added.
Beckett threw two innings Sunday night against Minnesota in the Grapefruit League opener.
