Daniel Snyder Forces Washington Post to Change Name of Redskins Blog

Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder doesn’t mind if his team’s name is used — so long as he is profiting off of its use.

The Washington Post has been asked to change the name of its well-known “Redskins Insider” blog. Since the Post has no contract with the NFL team, the newspaper had to change the name of the blog to “Football Insider,” despite the fact that the blog is famous for consistently reporting on the Washington Redskins alone, not for commenting on NFL teams in general.

“The Redskins, who have been at the forefront in creating their own multimedia operations, have been aggressive in policing the use and misuse of their ‘brand’ by others,” Paul Farhi of the Post said on its website. “For many years, the ‘Redskins’ name was used freely in the titles of local sports highlight shows on TV and radio. No longer. The team put an end to the practice several years ago, now only permitting ‘authorized’ uses of its name — that is, under contractual agreement.”

With no contractual agreement in place, it appears that “Redskins Insider” is now a thing of the past.
