Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has not traveled with the team to Portugal for Thursday's Europa League first-leg tie against Braga, instead he's being given rest as he continues to struggle with a nagging groin problem.

Gerrard, in fact, has played just 45 minutes in Europe this season.

Also out of the action will be Luis Suarez due to ineligibility, and defenders Daniel Agger, Jonjo Shelvey, Martin Kelly and Fabio Aurelio, who are out with injuries of their own, according to LFC.tv.

Andy Carroll, however, is expected to feature in the match.

"It's been a long process rehabilitating him – about eight or nine weeks – but we are happy with the result,'' club doctor Peter Brukner said of Carroll. "We've seen steady improvement over that time; he's much stronger in that tendon and in general as well.

"We still need to keep working with him and we want to build his training and playing load up to the level required. He'll play some more minutes against Braga and hopefully he'll be involved more and more with each game. Overall, we are really happy with his progress."

The traveling party for Liverpool's round-of-16 clash will be Brad Jones, Glen Johnson, Raul Meireles, Suarez, Carroll, Joe Cole, Dani Pacheco, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Maxi Rodriguez, Dirk Kuyt, Lucas, Danny Wilson, Jamie Carragher, David Ngog, Pepe Reina, Jay Spearing, Christian Poulsen, Shelvey, Kelly, Martin Skrtel, Martin Hansen, Peter Gulacsi, John Flanagan, and Emmanuel Mendy.
