A few weeks ago, the Virginia Commonwealth Rams were considered just another pesky team that bracketologists hated for messing up what should have been easy picks. Now people are starting to take notice. After losing four out of their last five regular-season games, many counted the Rams out, but they’re still fighting.
With the exception of star guard Kemba Walker, little about the University of Connecticut’s men’s basketball team stood out to critics at the beginning of the season. Few could have predicted how well Walker’s teammates would step up and help him carry the team through the playoffs. Jim Calhoun‘s boys have been nothing short of impressive.
Of course, the Cinderella story of VCU has been overshadowing the unlikeliness of the Butler Bulldogs making it to the Final Four for the second year in a row. Following an embarrassing loss to bottom-dweller, Youngstown State, the Bulldogs were 14-9 and their playoff chances were slim.
Unlike the other three schools, it is not as surprising that the Kentucky Wildcats ended up where they are. John Calipari knows how to coach tournament-winning teams and the Wildcats won with style over No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 North Carolina.
