Vote: Is NHL's Suspension of Matt Cooke Long Enough? The hockey world waited with bated breath on Monday afternoon as Matt Cooke met with league officials in Toronto to discuss his latest dangerous hit. In the end, the league came down pretty hard on the Pittsburgh forward.

The league announced Monday that it was suspending Cooke for the rest of the regular season (10 games) as well as the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. That means that Cooke's latest hit, a high elbow on Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh, will cost the Penguins forward 14-17 games. As a result, Cooke will forfeit more than $219,000 in salary.

The league cited Cooke's appearance as a repeat offender as part of the reasoning for its decision and discipline. The Penguins themselves even chimed in, with general manager Ray Shero releasing a statement saying that the organization agreed with the league's decision.

Still, while the suspension is pretty harsh, and while the Penguins agree with the league's decision, there are those who still think the league should have made a bigger example out of Cooke.
