Angels Fans Throw Dollar Bills at Carl Crawford to Show Outrage That Outfielder Chose Red Sox’ Money Over Angels’ Money

More than a few times over the past decade or so, you’ve seen high-profile players return to their former home parks and receive a less-than-friendly reception from the very same fans who used to cheer them fervently. The anger almost always stems from the feeling of being scorned because that high-profile player left town to sign a big-money contract with another team.

It happened when Alex Rodriguez returned to Seattle after joining the Rangers, when Manny Ramirez returned to Cleveland after signing with the Red Sox, but it never happened with a player who never even played for the fans that were so upset.

Until Thursday.

Carl Crawford, who signed a seven-year contract worth $142 million with Boston last winter, was the subject of some fans’ scorn in Anaheim. The fans there never rooted for Crawford in an Angels uniform, but they thought they would have that opportunity this year. But the Angels’ offer wasn’t even close to that of the Red Sox, and Crawford’s decision was rather easy.

Still, the fans were upset (or at least one fan with a few extra bucks), and they showed it by tossing some rolled-up dollar bills onto the field, to try to make some statement about greed or betrayal or something like that.

Or the fans were overly impressed with the work of the bat boy and wanted to offer up a little tip. It’s one or the other.
