The Cal State Long Beach cheerleading team won the National Cheerleaders Association title for its division in Daytona Beach, Fla., last weekend, but members of the team don't have anything to cheer about now.
The team has been stripped of its national title for violating rules by using a non-student in competition, according to MSNBC.
The person in question is a former student who graduated in December, but the university is also investigating the eligibility of another member, as well, according to the report.
The university suspects that the cheer team was fully aware of the violations, CSULB communications coordinator Christina Esparza told MSNBC.
When the university discovered the violation, it immediately notified the NCAA and fired coach Eric Anderson, who had led Long Beach's cheer team for 10 years and has more than 30 national titles to his name.
"We're educators, and if we expect our students to be held to ethical standards, we have to do the same ourselves," Esparza said to MSNBC.
