Track and field legend Carl Lewis is stepping into a new form of competition, as he will annouce Monday that he is running for New Jersey state senate as a Democrat, according to The Associated Press.
In the years since his athletic career that spanned nearly two decades, Lewis has been working as a civic activist, serving on the celebrity board of the Ronald McDonald House Charities since 2007.
He will run in the state's 8th District, challenging for the seat held by Republican Dawn Addiego.
New Jersey has proved to be kind to athlete politicians over the years, both as the home to basketball legend and Senator Bill Bradley and former Pro Bowl lineman and current congressman Jon Runyan.
