After defeating rival Barcelona for the domestic cup in extra time on Wednesday, the team traveled back to the capital to celebrate. Driving through Madrid atop a double-decker bus, defender Sergio Ramos dropped the 33-pound cup to the ground, where it was run over by the bus’ front right wheel, MSNBC.com reports.
Emergency service members on scene quickly gathered the broken pieces of the Copa del Rey and it was safely stored on the bus. After the incident, the cup did not show up at the Plaza de Cibeles in central Madrid, the traditional celebration point for the club.
According to Ramos, however, the cup is doing just fine.
“The cup fell, it fell,” Ramos said. “But the cup is OK.”
Officials from Real Madrid reported on Thursday that the cup is being repaired.
“It is not in good shape, evidently — it was run over by a bus,” Madrid spokeswoman Marta Santisteban said. “It has to be fixed.”
Once repaired, the cup will be put on display with the rest of the team’s hardware in the club museum trophy case.
Ramos has since joked about the incident on Twitter, saying the cup did not slip from his hands — it jumped.
“The whole thing about the cup was a misunderstanding, it didn’t fall,” the tweet read. “It jumped off when it reached Cibeles and saw so many Madrid fans.”
