Dennis Wideman Hospitalized With 'Significant Leg Hematoma' Capitals defenseman Dennis Wideman is recovering in a Washington, D.C., hospital from a “significant leg hematoma.”

TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported Thursday night that Wideman suffered a deep contusion on a leg-to-leg collision with Tuomo Ruutu on Tuesday night. That bruise worsened, and blood leaked into the muscle.

Mike Knuble said that the defenseman has been sending teammates photos of his “severely swollen leg, which had to be sliced open to drain blood/relieve pressure.”

It is not yet known when Wideman will return to the Capitals, who sit comfortably ahead of the Lightning for the Southwest Division lead, but are just one point behind the Flyers for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.
