In a perfect Red Sox Nation, cornerstone players like Kevin Youkilis would never go down with an injury in the middle of a game. Unfortunately, as last season proved, we don't live in a perfect Red Sox Nation.
However, it's nice to know that when players go down with an injury, or require a night off, there are dependable players that can step in at a moment's notice. That's exactly what the Red Sox have in Jed Lowrie.
Lowrie made a quick swap from shortstop to third base on Thursday night after Youkilis left with a shin injury in the first inning. Though it was tough to lose Youk — who's currently listed as day-to-day — it's definitely a comfort knowing Lowrie is there to support the Sox in a jam.
