While the New York Jets are the undisputed kings of giving bulletin board material to opposing teams, Bill Belichick usually keeps his Patriots squad in check. That’s why so many eyebrows raised this past season when the Patriots were a bit more outspoken than usual.
Tom Brady openly declared his hatred of the Jets, saying he refused to watch their HBO series, Hard Knocks. Prior to the two teams’ second round playoff matchup, Wes Welker took a few jabs at Rex Ryan about his foot fetish scandal, which even prompted Belichick to bench the Pro Bowl wide receiver for the opening drive of the game.
These two incidents might not be a big deal, and are actually quite tame in terms of what some NFL players say and do on a weekly basis, but Jets linebacker Bart Scott thinks there’s much more to the Patriots’ comments.
“That’s doesn’t sound right, that kind of talk,” Scott told Metro New York about Welker’s comments. “That’s when you know they’re buying into us, when they start sounding like we talk. Wes Welker start trying to be us, sounding like we do. That’s how you know they want to be us.”
The Patriots might not, and probably won’t, respond to Scott’s latest comments, but hearing the outspoken linebacker fire the first shot of the offseason has to make Pats players want an NFL season this year even more.
