Red Sox Fans Should Not Give Up Hope Yet As Minnesota Twins Won World Series in 1991 After 2-9 Start Let's face it, this is not the start Red Sox fans were expecting this season. Alas, after they were edged by Tampa Bay on Tuesday night, the Sox dropped to 2-9 to start the year.

The Red Sox now post the worst record in Major League Baseball, leaving fans and media members alike scrambling for answers. No one was expecting such a disappointing start, especially in a season where the Sox were dubbed the likely World Series champions of 2011.

Even though it's hard to find positives in this frustrating run, there is still hope for the Red Sox as teams in the past have experienced similar struggles and gone on to post very successful seasons.

Take the 1991 Minnesota Twins, for example. Led offensively by Kirby Puckett and Chili Davis (who happens to be the hitting coach for the Red Sox at Triple-A Pawtucket), the Twins got off to a tough 2-9 start, but went on to win the 1991 World Series, edging the Atlanta Braves in a thrilling seven-game series.

Despite the 2-9 start, the Twins won 95 games that season, finishing first in the AL West. After the early-season slump, Minnesota picked things up toward the end of April, and went on to post a 15-game winning streak in June.

Another solid example is the 2002 Anaheim Angels, who posted a 3-8 record to kick off their championship season. The Angels won 99 games that year, earning the AL Wild Card playoff berth to play for the franchise's first World Series victory. That was also a seven-game series with the deciding game being won by current Red Sox starter John Lackey.

So, the dark clouds may be hovering over Red Sox Nation, but recent history provides a silver lining for the struggling Sox as they look to snap out of their current slump.
