The Bruins finally prevailed in a Game 7, beating archrival Montreal in their opening-round series on Wednesday. Now all they have to do is beat the Flyers four times to reach the Eastern Conference finals.
That goal eluded them last year despite taking a 3-0 lead in the series and a 3-0 lead in Game 7 at the Garden. Having to face the Flyers again in the same round could be a daunting challenge, but avenging that humiliating defeat could also be exactly the extra incentive the Bruins need to finally get over the hump and advance past the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1992.
Getting past the Flyers won’t be easy, and a lot will have to happen to make this year’s result a little more enjoyable for the Bruins’ long-suffering fan base. Those fans, whom coach Claude Julien said had been “punished enough” before Nathan Horton gave them a reason to rejoice with his overtime goal in Game 7 against the Habs, are hoping for another reason to celebrate this spring.
