Two years ago, the bodyguards of Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen allegedly fired shots at paparazzi trying to snap photos of the couple during their nuptials in Costa Rica. Now, the trio will have their day in court to defend their actions.
Miguel Solis, Manuel Valverde and Alexander Rivas will attend a private oral hearing on April 29 in Costa Rica to address the charges filed against them by Agence France-Presse photographer Yuri Cortez and Rolando Aviles of Costa Rican newspaper Al Dia, the Huffington Post reports.
The photographers tried to sue Brady and Bundchen in the United States six months after the altercation, but the suit was discarded by a New York state judge, saying there was no reason for the case to be tried in the United States.
The couple’s bodyguards reportedly fired shots at the photographers when they refused to give up their cameras with captured footage of the wedding, and fled the scene. According to the charges, the bodyguards fired at the photographer’s vehicle when they were trying to leave, damaging the rear window. No one was hurt during the incident.
While some argue that the photographers were within their legal rights to be taking pictures from the neighboring property of the wedding site, others argue that the bodyguards had the right to remove them. Brady himself defended his bodyguards, calling the photographer’s claims “absolute b.s.” in a 2009 issue of Sports Illustrated.
“We found two guys on our property, and we told them to get out,” Brady said. “Our security guys didn’t even have guns. There were no shots fired.”
