By doing so, however, Ramirez took away some of the allure of a series with the Rays that will start on Monday night at Fenway Park. Had Ramirez not decided to hang ’em up, he would be on his way to Boston with the Tampa Bay Rays making his return to Fenway.
He wouldn’t have been doing it alone, either. The Rays decided that they’d take a small risk on signing Ramirez in the offseason, but they also picked up former Red Sox outfielder Johnny Damon.
The return of that duo would surely bring back memories of the 2004 season in which Damon, Ramirez and the rest of the self-proclaimed “Idiots” won Boston’s first World Series in almost a century.
Ramirez ruined that idea with his sudden retirement, but it will be interesting to see what kind of reaction Damon will get as a member of the Rays. We all saw how he was treated when returning as a Yankee.
The outfielder isn’t the only “Idiot” making a return to Fenway recently. Kevin Millar, whose “Don’t let us win tonight” speech may one day be commemorated with a plaque at Faneuil Hall (only half kidding), was in the house over the weekend with the Yankees in town. The loud-mouthed Millar took in Saturday’s game next to owner John Henry before heading upstairs to catch up with general manager Theo Epstein.
