Alex Rodriguez’s Error Caps Off Disastrous Weekend for Yankees, Who Breathe Life Back Into Red Sox

It’s early in the season, yes, but the Yankees did hold a five-game lead in the loss column over the Red Sox heading into this weekend. Even though it’s still May, a Yankees sweep would have delivered a staggering blow to Boston, one that would be hard to recover from, regardless of the calendar month.

Instead, it was Boston coming away with a sweep, finally reaching the .500 mark and building some much-needed momentum.

The Yanks kept two of the games close and had their Hall of Fame catcher make a big stink in the other, so it’s hard to pin the sweep on any one person or play. But, for simplicity’s sake, we invite Sox fans to have a good laugh at Alex Rodriguez‘s error from Sunday night that allowed Dustin Pedroia to score the sixth Red Sox run of the night (turned out to be the game-winner).

Of course, we know that Carl Crawford‘s error in the bottom of the seventh gave that run right back, that Mike Everitt‘s strike zone was questionable at best, that Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter went a combined 5-for-26 in the series, that David Ortiz was hitting home runs with broken bats and Jarrod Saltalamacchia was hitting his first homer since high school (or something like that). So we know there were a lot of factors at play.

But still, A-Rod made an error that looked in a weird way like a mirror image of another error made in New York once upon a time. The stakes weren’t quite as high (understatement), but, well, Sox fans haven’t had too much to celebrate this season, so the error is as good a reason as any.
