Mark Herzlich has been through far worse.
After surprisingly going undrafted over the weekend, the cancer survivor and former Boston College linebacker is viewing this adversity as the latest thing he'll fight to overcome.
"When I was diagnosed with cancer, I was told I couldn't play football again," Herzlich told NESN.com on Monday. "Not getting drafted was frustrating. It's like they're saying I can't play football again, but I'm going to work out, and there's free agency. I'm just going to work hard, get into a camp, go from there and prove it to everyone that I belong in the NFL."
Herzlich will be able to sign a contract once free agency begins, and going undrafted can sometimes be a blessing in disguise because players can find a team that fits them best.
Herzlich sounded frustrated, but there was also an inspiring tone in his voice. He's certain he'll impress a team with his work ethic and willingness to overcome another series of challenges, and he knows things will turn for the better.
"Saturday was frustrating," Herzlich said. "It was a long day. But there will be free agency. In the past, free agency would have already started, and I'd probably be on a team right now. We'll wait to see how that goes."
